Empowering the Two Freedoms of July Most of us don’t stop to think about it, but during the month of July many people acknowledge or celebrate two of our freedoms in very different ways. The first, and most obvious is the celebration of Independence Day on July 4th. Traditionally, the holiday includes family picnics and fireworks. This year we will include a special W.O.W. performance by Australian Didgeridoo master Phil Jones at 7:00 p.m. in our Sanctuary. We are able to celebrate our Independence from British rule today because we built our country on the firm foundation of a new government ruled by the people it serves. Without the establishment of a new foundation, the freedom our forefathers created would have never lasted. The second freedom is the freedom that comes from summer activities and outings. Elitch’s, Rockies games, cycling, hiking, gardening, visiting family, road trips, or even embarking on that special “dream” vacation are all freedoms we may enjoy because we have a regular form of income, and a place we call home. Without such a foundation we would be afraid to move forth, held back by fear that there would be no funds or place to live when we return. Our own belief and trust give us the power to explore, to try new things, make bigger plans, see new vistas and meet new people. In many ways even our summer vacations and outings are a spiritual experience--a reflection of our faith and trust while expressing our inherent nature to expand our horizons. But just because we are on a journey enjoying our freedom doesn’t mean we don’t also have a responsibility to maintain the foundation we have created here at home; otherwise we would have nothing to come home to, a home port, a starting point for the next adventure. The house payments must still be made, the utilities paid, and the plants still need to be watered. The same is true about your spiritual home here at The Denver Church. When we are away we sometimes forget that just because it may be impossible to attend for a few weeks, the expenses of the church go on in our absence. You are the foundation on which this church has been built, and we want it to be here when you return. We want it to continue to flourish and serve people’s spiritual needs for generations to come. We are so blessed to have such a powerful Ministerial Team, an outstanding group of personal spiritual advisors in our Practitioners, an award winning Music Department, a Children’s Church to empower the young minds who will be the leaders of tomorrow. We touch so many people’s lives, through our inspiring Sunday and Wednesday services, classes, support groups, outreach programs and community activities, as well as the generous support of other non-profit organizations who assist people in need beyond the scope of our capacity. No-kill animal shelters, teen suicide prevention programs, women’s day shelters, training programs, and other services all depend upon our support. Most of all, to most of us is our teachings which have set us free to live life to the fullest. How many times have each of us said we don’t know how we could have faced life’s challenges and released the bondage of victimhood without this church? It’s a place of celebration, a community of support when we need it, and a constant reminder that we are a part of something greater than anything we face in life. This is the foundation on which you may build, create, and live your greatest freedom; the freedom to be you, knowing you belong. If your travels this summer take you away from the church, you may still support your spiritual home through our automatic debit/credit card program, or by sending a check. Perhaps this is a time to evaluate the value the Church has in your life and consider increasing your support so we may continue to serve those even less fortunate than we are. We all wish to make a difference in this world, and your part in supporting The Denver Church--touching and transforming lives of people throughout Denver--may be the most important and powerful thing you do in life to help others. Our freedom is built upon a strong foundation empowering our journey. |
