Kicking Tina, Transforming Lives

Sunday morning is our most important time here at The Denver Church of Religious Science (DCRS), just as it is for most spiritual communities. It is this time we set aside in our daily lives to come together in conscious connection and celebration of the Loving Presence as Divine Life, Divine Creation, and the Divine Idea, which is both our truth and universal truth—what we call God.

But, just as God’s creative energy is present and available every moment of every day in our personal lives and everywhere in the universe, our teachings are also always available and present to empower our daily life experiences. Our spiritual practice is not just some ritualistic tradition to use for only an hour on Sunday. We are not a Sunday morning religion. Our Science of Mind philosophy has come forth over the ages, through ancient scriptures as well as current scientific discovery. It acts as an empowering guide to understanding, to opening our consciousness to greater possibilities, and to unifying consciousness in creating a world of limitless new tomorrows.

Since The Denver Church of Religious Science is the presence of this teaching in Denver, we too are constantly discovering powerful new ways to reach out and touch our community and empower its people. For example, Reverend Jim and Reverend Barbara are often invited to be special guests and keynote speakers at UCRS, RSI, and Unity churches as well as other community events throughout Colorado and beyond. In this same way our Music Director, Christy Wessler, is a familiar face and prominent talent in the Colorado music scene, and is gaining a greater visibility and reputation outside our state.

For the past eight years, the church has also been a sponsor and a visible presence on the planning committee of the Denver Martin Luther King Day celebration, one of the largest in the nation, with annual attendance of over 30,000 individuals. Each year, we also collect and distribute hundreds of special stuffed animals during “Operation Bear Hugs;” we support many special community projects, which include decorating the Hospice of St. John at Christmas; and we provide hundreds of dollars in financial support each month to other non-profit organizations who partner us in empowering our community in ways we cannot.

We are now directly reaching people and changing lives beyond the Sunday celebration, Science of Mind classes, and workshops. Through support groups and 12-step programs, we are able to reach people by addressing specific challenges they may be facing in their lives at this time. For example:

Business Group
The DCRS Business Group is open to all business owners and self-employed individuals who wish to better express their spiritual presence and the truth of abundance through their business activities.
There is no place in life where we have a greater opportunity to express our understanding of spiritual principles than through our business activities. When we demonstrate in our business activities the laws of circulation, principles of prosperity, joy of giving, Spirit’s abundance and the sharing of abundance, our businesses grow. Our enjoyment in being a part of the flow of life becomes the nature of our business.

The Drumming Circle
The Drumming Circle is the result of the loving vision of our multi-talented church percussionist, Gregg Wilkins, and has become a wonderful way for many of our congregants and people outside the church to escape the world’s pressures, find their inner natural rhythm, and embrace life in their own unique way. In 2004, the church was able to assist Gregg in attending a week-long coming together of circle leaders and creators in Hawaii. The leaders traveled from around the globe to learn, empower and support each other, as well as share the spiritual power expressed through drum circles. Since the trip, Gregg has shared his time and talents with other Colorado churches empowering many of them to create their own drumming circles.

Women’s Spiritual Empowerment Circle
As the world moves at a faster and faster pace, the demands from family, work and outside life can be overwhelming. The Women’s Spiritual Empowerment Circle provides an opportunity for women to “get off the wheel” for awhile, spend time with other like-minded women, and to just “Be.” Alice Nutter, R.Sc.P., and her group of volunteers are always coming up with new programs and new guest presenters to empower and feed the feminine creative urge, and to reveal the divine feminine at the core of every woman.

The Men’s Spiritual Growth Circle
Just as womens’ roles in the family and in society have changed, men have also faced an adjustment in perspective from their old patriarchal role. To find purpose, they must redefine their own power and gifts while learning to communicate from a deep personal level with other men. Centered on sound spiritual teachings and proven paths of enfoldment, the Men’s Circle provides a support system not provided by any other group, yet can be used by all men to gain new levels of understanding and purpose.

While only a couple of months old, the power generated by these men and their experience as a group has taken form in a logo to identify the group as well as the creation of their own web page in preparation for reaching out to others.

“I Did It; So Can You” – A Cessation of Smoking Program
Spiritual power, practitioner consciousness, supportive group dynamics, and time-proven practices come together in assisting each person to reveal the smoke-free individual within. This is the power behind our special group for those who wish to stop smoking.

LifeFocus
LifeFocus was created to assist individuals in creating a space in their daily lives for spiritual practices. Many individuals insist that their lives are already so busy they don’t have time to set aside for meditation, prayer, or inspirational reading. Yet without a daily spiritual practice to get centered, focus intentions, find purpose or silence the confusion, life can soon become so off-center and out of control it becomes harder and harder to function affirmatively and with purpose. Through this group, we discover the tools and techniques to maximize our time each day while providing space to listen to our higher self, the truth of our being.

DCRS is also home to several groups whose programs come from outside our teachings, including five weekly AA meetings that serve our wonderful GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) community, and a soon-to-be-announced regular weekly Course in Miracles program.

Kicking Tina
However, one of the most exciting and unique new programs is “Kicking Tina” (Tina is a common street name for crystal meth), a 12-step program not offered anywhere else in the city. Created earlier this year by a group of dedicated and committed church members who gave the program its spiritual power, while working with a well known and highly respected Substance Abuse Counselor who gave the program his vast experience, “Kicking Tina” is open to GLBT community members who are recovering from methamphetamine substance abuse. Through the combined vision of its creators, through seeing the changes in the lives of the people involved, we are truly witness to Spirit’s healing presence in action.

Many individuals, on the road to recovery after detoxification, face feelings of isolation and loneliness in their lives. For many, recovery is not only about use of the substance, but also the loss of its culture and the social structure which surrounds its use. No longer accepted by former friends who are still using and having no other social structure to take its place, the urge to return to its use can sometimes take over.

Through Kicking Tina, the participants no longer have to face this challenge alone. The sharing of experiences, the deep understanding of its impact on their lives, and the unexpected obstacles they must overcome can only be understood by others going through the same process. By providing a safe place for social gathering as well as a sense of belonging, we are able to empower the healing process. Just last month, several of the group’s members participated in our first field trip to Pike’s Peak and the Garden of the Gods, a joining of new life and new friends.

By next year, the church will be offering another new support group, “Spirituality & Healing” based on research done by Harvard Medical School, the Mind Body Institute, and other leaders in the medical field. Reverend Jim completed a course of study at Harvard in Boston in 1996 on “Spirituality & Healing in Medicine” and will be returning to Harvard in December to study the latest research and medical findings surrounding spiritual healing and the role that spirit and faith have in the healing process.

We are living in a rapidly evolving world. The Denver Church of Religious Science knows that the power of Spirit is with us every day in every way as we move forward to hew horizons of possibilities. Join us and see how powerful your life can be as we continue to move forward within the Creative Medium to provide new resources.
