Tips
for Eco-Friendly Living Reducing and Eliminating Junk Mail
It’s estimated that 44% of unsolicited junk mail is left unopened.
The time you spend opening the rest consumes about eight months of your
life! There are many ways to reduce and eliminate the amount of junk
mail in your life:
-
When you receive
unwanted mail or catalogs, take the time to call the company
directly to request that your name be removed from its mailing list.
Simply throwing it in the trash doesn’t stop the mail from being
sent. Taking this extra step will save time, energy and trees.
-
Log onto the Direct
Marketing Association’s website and register all the ways your mail
is addressed to you:
www.DMAConsumers.org/cgi/offmailinglist.
The cost to remove your name is $1.
-
You can remove your
name from credit card, loan solicitation and insurance company
mailings by visiting
www.OptOutPreScreen.com or by calling 888-567-8688.
-
Get rid of unwanted
catalogs by going to
www.catalogchoice.org.
-
Contact your bank,
credit card and investment companies and request that they do not
sell or share your name and personal information.
-
Do not send in warranty
cards. This places your name on lots of mailing lists.
-
Do not enter contests.
These companies sell your name and personal information.
-
Consider supporting the
movement for federal junk mail legislation at
www.newdream.org/junkmail.
